What kind of genius chooses as the first update button the one which causes you to lose everything you’ve entered so far?:

The same one who places Preview directly next to Trash?:
“Oops! OH, NO!!”

And tell me: WHY put Preview BEFORE Save Draft, rather than t’other way ’round? Is it because you’d rather see what you’ve done before you’ve done it?

But the crowning achievement of this web page artiste is to place
Save Draft directly adjacent to Publish:
“Oops! AHHHHHHHH!!!!! Kill me now!!!!”

Our WordPress Overlords. Ya’ gotta love ’em.
Anyone with half a lick of sense would have the buttons in this order:
Draft, Preview, Publish…That OTHER One.
See how the related first three are in increasing saturation of the same color? I find little touches like that helpful. How about you?

Don’t know how many times last night when DRAFTING a post (Note to WP: Some people like to craft and think about their posts rather than shoot them out on the fly 15 times a day from their isuckphones) I went to hit the Publish button and just managed to stop myself with a “Oh, shit, that was close”.
I LOVE your solution. Next time that irritating McDonald’s School of Customer Service ‘How can we help you’ pop up appears, you should let them know.
I call the FP bloggers the Blue Sticker people. I got a bit alarmed with my Jekyll and Hyde post when some commenters suggested it was worthy of being FP’d. I take it as something of a point of pride to have a wall free of the Blue Sticker. It feels Anti-Establishment which I’m all about (admittedly in a shy, introverted way).

I couldn’t code my way out of a wet paper bag. 40 years ago i used to code on a mainframe – I’ve seen myself spend the whole night from dusk to dawn trying to get a program to compile and run- and then after 12 hours of trying – find a missing period. Ha!

When I started, I thought “Press This” was a powerful tool. When the same post showed up twice for me, of course I deleted the original. I should have read the instruction manual ??? Their way to force people to stop using the old editor. Such a petty way. Less obnoxious if Featured Image worked properly in the new editor first, though. D#mned piece of sh#te. Took me something like eleven tries on my first pleasure of experiencing the new editor to get the image to “stick”.
Grrr. Still lovin’ that sense of humor, Van? (I really needed more than three hours of sleep, didn’t I? 😀 )

Their patronizing attitude–it galls.
But worse: Their market strategy appalls.
I could be wrong, but I believe they are misreading their base. They wanted a KISS gui-ized interface that looked teddy-bear huggable so that it wouldn’t scare off tech-phobes. I get that. They’re up against friendlier products cutting into their market share. But adding childish boops is a good way to irk the OTHER part of your base, and I don’t think it effectively reaches out and hugs the part you’re aiming at.
Not as well as a product that works, and has a a good look and flow for the user. Maybe they should have asked those users for some input. DID they? DID they solicit help? And was there a call for Beta testers? I didn’t see it…

/ 2015/06/04I have booked mark all of the old, easier to navigate and use older templates, Babe — the post dashboard, notifications, statistic. But it is ominous to me that everything I read from the Automattic writers who trumpet these new platforms as they launch says that our favorite templates will remain available for now. Somebody in the main suite may indeed have gotten into founder Matt Mullenweg’s ear and convinced him that the new WordPress is indeed best for all. That will leave those of us passionate that our WordPress is better for our needs forced to deal with their templates if this becomes reality.
As as aside, I applied for their position of Happiness Engineer, hoping to inject some of my experience and thinking ability into the mix, but received a polite rejection suggesting I get more involved on their forums and reading their books to become better acquainted with their philosophies or perhaps apply for a position on their site better suited for my abilities. Sigh. I can’t find direct assistant to Matt Mullenweg on there.
As an aside to my aside, I’ve never been Freshly Pressed, either. I don’t think either you nor I are on their radar. Although I am thinking I probably aren’t helping my Automattic employment prospects much with this comment, though I should be, because Mr. Mullenwig would be wise to listen to and continue addressing the needs of the large number of us who are so passionate about the old templates, and I’d make a great liaison, wouldn’t I?

I’m sorry about your rejection. I just put a comment on Victo’s site today that said, basically, hiring is done more today according to youth and social network connections than on ability to do a job properly. I can’t speak to your technical level, but is sounds like right out the gate the WP folk felt “You haven’t schmoozed enough with us–you’re not one of us.”
My FP thing is ridiculous. I’m envious like a sour-faced child, I admire the writing of my blog-friends to whom it’s been awarded, I admire the writing of my blog friends to whom it has not.
Yet…whenever I take a gander, I see a lot of bland cr#p to which it IS awarded in among the amazing, impressive other pieces which stand out.
I also seem to see a sameness of themes. Someone with more time and energy than I should do a breakdown of FP themes to do if that perception is reality. I’d like to see, too, a breakdown within each theme (I don’t mean just the author’s declared category, either), the author’s gender and race, how many followers they already have, how often they’ve been previously FP’d, and then compare this to all who blog on WP (if we could do age…) Could get interesting.

My problem about getting hired as a happiness engineer is that I have no coding background. I’m good with people and words and problem solving, but that portion of the game, I’d have to learn on the fly. But I could! And I think my experience in all the other areas far outweigh the no-coding. They should think out of the box sometimes, and that’s what I said in my cover letter. You don’t need all square pegs. Sometimes a round peg that was a newsprint/blogger since graduation from college in 1979 might be nice to have on the team.
About Freshly Pressed, I think it’s all individual taste of each judge who picks it. I don’t think they have any metrics to it at all. Anway, if I were the boss in charge of Freshly Pressed, I’d say: Read as many blogs as you can and pick the stories you like best for Freshly Pressed. And that would be that.
Your idea for a story about it is interesting. Somewhat. But I sure don’t want to do that much statistical research on it. 🙂

That is the same as the place I have been going, and that page used to have Featured Image at the bottom right. It is no longer there. Or do you know something I have forgotten?
On the other, I get what you’re saying, but I do also understand the staff reluctant to hire someone with zero coding experience.
For the FP issues, I don’t think they do have any conscious metrics, no. I suggest they have unconscious leanings, as do we all, and that the use of conscious metrics might be appropriate. My understanding is that some used to exist, before I joined WP.
I sure wasn’t suggesting YOU do the analysis, Mark–You are a busy guy, and no nerd! It’s not worth it, anyhow. I was just babbling. You have a good day yourself, and thanks again for your kindness in sending that link–putting yourself out there. XXOO

/ 2015/06/04Mark, I want to expand: Because WP is non-local and huge, a newbie with no experience–that’s tough. I managed to finagle an offer from an architecture firm by showing up every day and wearing them down. You are so personable–as you know–I think you could have better results locally with a smaller company and the schmooze factor. Why not take a couple of the free online coding courses, if this is something you want to pursue? Although, I think you would be mad popular as a Geek Squad guy: Going out and figuring out what’s up with THAT. That really lends itself to OJT learning, too, from the other gals/guys, as well as on your own–and when you’re in the field, you can tap and call someone for help.

/ 2015/06/04I don’t know why there’s never an option to retain the old set-up. Every time I post a draft I have to finagle my way back to the old set-up that allows me to use tags and categories that show up automatically, rather than giving me a limited number or forcing me to recall them from memory. There’s probably a way that I can have the old set-up be my default, but I haven’t figured it out. I understand change when things aren’t working right, but change for change’s sake gets tiresome. And change that adds in potential pitfalls like you’ve identified is really tiresome.

/ 2015/06/06I have lost several drafts since the Beep Beep Boop BS began. Twice I began a new post and then it was revealed to me that I had a saved draft, not that it appeared as a draft in the draft folder. It was disturbing to say the least.
Initially, I wrote my posts in Word, but the formatting was a nightmare — odd spacing in my early posts.
I do still have featured image.
I wonder how many of us have completely different templates…

/ 2015/06/06I’m sorry you lost your drafts!! The new editor IS quite buggy thus far. I do see that they’re working on it–there have been two improvements in a week (Yay.)–so let us all hope the fun ride smoothes out quickly.
The Featured Image issue was my ignorance, it turns out. It revealed an IMPROVEMENT in the new editor(!): Some themes don’t offer Featured Image–who knew? I hadn’t. I’d recently changed my theme (to a very similar one as the old). So I, an easily-confused person, was seeing F.I. on the old editor for posts created in the old theme…but not the new. Turns out the NEW editor lets you set F.I. for ALL themes.
